Forex Pip Value Calculator

A pip value expresses how much a one-pip price movement changes the value of a position. The result depends on contract size, position size, pip convention, and account currency. This calculator deliberately exposes those assumptions instead of guessing a currency pair. Use 0.0001 for many non-JPY forex pairs and 0.01 for many JPY pairs, then confirm the definition in the instrument specification.

Formula and assumptions

Pip value = lots × 100,000 units × pip size × quote-to-account conversion multiplier

When the account currency is the same as the pair’s quote currency, the conversion multiplier is 1. If they differ, enter the amount of account currency represented by one unit of quote currency. Direction matters: use the quote-to-account rate, not its reciprocal, and validate it against a current market source.

How to use the calculator

  1. 01Enter the position size in standard lots.
  2. 02Enter the instrument’s pip size. Four-decimal pairs commonly use 0.0001; two-decimal JPY quotations commonly use 0.01.
  3. 03Keep the conversion multiplier at 1 when quote currency and account currency match. Otherwise enter a current quote-to-account multiplier.
  4. 04Use the result as one input to position sizing, then check the platform’s displayed tick value before submitting an order.

How to interpret the result

  • Pip value is shown in the chosen account currency when the supplied conversion multiplier is correct.
  • Multiplying pip value by stop distance estimates the price-movement component of risk before transaction costs and execution effects.
  • A smaller or larger lot size changes pip value proportionally; doubling lots doubles the theoretical value per pip.

Worked example

At 0.50 standard lots and a 0.0001 pip size, a pair quoted in the account currency has an estimated pip value of 5.00. A 30-pip move therefore represents about 150 before spreads, commissions, slippage, financing, and currency-conversion costs.

Limits and risk controls

  • Some platforms distinguish a pip from a fractional pip or point. Confirm the display precision and tick size.
  • Metals, indices, futures, options, and crypto instruments often use contract multipliers rather than the 100,000-unit spot-forex convention.
  • Conversion rates move. A saved result can become stale, especially for cross-currency accounts and volatile markets.
